Wings of Desire (1987)- Directed by Wim Wenders. Only a really wonderful film could take a somewhat hokey premise of angels watching over, and falling in love with, humanity and make it incredibly affecting and profound. It’s almost like the opposite of Werner Herzog’s The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) since it’s about an all-knowing outsider’s perspective on humanity rather than an outsider who knows nothing. And it doesn’t hurt that Nick Cave shows up and performs in it a couple of times.
